Terms of service
Last updated 30 August 2026
This document sets out how InkWrit works commercially: what you get for free, how tokens and plans are bought and spent, who owns the writing, and what the commercial rights and ISBN add-ons cover. It is written to be readable — where a clause is doing real legal work, we have tried to say so plainly rather than burying it.
1. Who we are and what this covers
InkWrit ("InkWrit", "we", "us", "our") is an AI book-writing service operated at inkwrit.ai by ModernTyrTech, a Buxton Holdings company. These terms govern your use of the service (the "Service"), including the writing studio, the story bible, AI generation, exports, token plans and purchases, the bring-your-own-key plan, the editor marketplace, marketing sites and the optional add-ons.
By creating an account you agree to these terms. If you do not agree with them, do not create an account.
2. Your account
You need an account to use InkWrit. You can create one with an email address and password or by continuing with Google; either way it is the same account, matched by email address. You are responsible for keeping your login credentials secure and for activity that happens under your account.
You must be at least 13 years old to use InkWrit, and old enough to enter a binding contract in your jurisdiction. Accounts are for individuals; if you are writing on behalf of clients, that is expected and permitted, but the account and its token balance belong to you.
3. What InkWrit is, and what it is not
InkWrit is a writing tool. It helps you plan, draft, revise, analyse and format a book. It does not guarantee that the resulting book will be published, accepted by any retailer or platform, sell any number of copies, or meet any particular standard of quality.
Analysis features — plot-hole detection, spoiler timing, pacing and world-building checks — are advisory. They can miss problems and can flag things that are not problems. They are not a substitute for an editor.
4. Tokens and plans
InkWrit is free to access and a plan is never required to use it. AI generation is paid for with tokens, obtained either through a monthly plan or as a one-time top-up purchased through our payment processor.
Tokens are a prepaid balance for use inside InkWrit. They are not currency, carry no cash value, cannot be transferred between accounts, and cannot be exchanged for money.
- New accounts receive a one-time grant of free tokens on signup. Granted tokens are promotional and non-refundable.
- Every AI job is estimated before it runs. If your balance does not cover the estimate, the job will not start.
- You are charged the actual usage of a completed job, recorded to your ledger with the model used and the tokens spent.
- Plan tokens are added at the start of each billing period and roll over for twelve months from the date they are granted.
- Tokens bought as a one-time top-up do not expire while your account is open.
- Plans change the token allowance and the rate only. Every feature of the service, including all export formats, is available without a plan.
5. The bring-your-own-key plan
The bring-your-own-key plan is a monthly subscription that lets you run InkWrit's writing features on your own Anthropic API key instead of tokens. While the plan is active and a working key is on file, AI writing jobs are not charged tokens. Image generation is not covered by this plan and continues to use tokens.
Your key is stored encrypted, is used only to run your own requests, and is never shown again after you save it. If your key is rejected by Anthropic, the request fails with a clear error; we never fall back to our own key on your behalf.
- Usage on your key is billed to you directly by Anthropic under your agreement with them. Their charges are separate from, and in addition to, the plan fee.
- You are responsible for keeping your key valid, funded and compliant with Anthropic's terms of service.
- The plan fee is for access to this mode of the Service. It does not include tokens and is not refunded for partial months.
- If the plan lapses or your key is removed, your account simply returns to token metering. Nothing is lost.
6. Refunds, cancellation and billing problems
Plans are subscriptions: they renew automatically each billing period at the then-current price until you cancel, and you can cancel at any time from the Tokens page. By purchasing tokens you request immediate supply of digital content, which can affect a statutory withdrawal or cooling-off right where one applies.
Token purchases are prepaid digital goods and are generally non-refundable once made, to the extent permitted by the consumer law that applies to you. Nothing in these terms removes a statutory right you have.
You may cancel or change a plan at any time. Cancellation takes effect at the end of the billing period you have already paid for, and we do not refund part-months. Tokens already granted stay in your balance under the twelve-month rollover, and cancelling returns you to the free tier rather than locking you out of your manuscripts.
If a job fails through our fault, the tokens are returned to your balance. If you believe you have been charged incorrectly, contact us with the relevant ledger entry — every charge is itemised — and we will investigate and correct genuine errors.
Add-on purchases (commercial rights licences and ISBN orders) are refundable only before fulfilment has begun.
Domain registrations are the one thing we cannot refund once fulfilled, because the registry charge is final the moment it accepts the name. A registration that fails is refunded automatically. Full terms are in the domains section below.
7. Ownership of your writing
You own what you create in InkWrit: your manuscript, outlines, story bible, notes and uploaded material. We claim no ownership interest in it.
This includes images you upload, such as cover art and interior illustrations. You must hold the rights to anything you upload.
You grant us a limited licence to store, process and transmit your content solely to operate the service for you: assembling context for your own AI requests, generating your exports, backing up your work and, where you publish a marketing site, displaying the content you chose to publish. That licence exists to run the product and for nothing else, and it ends for published sites when you unpublish them.
We do not use your manuscripts to train AI models.
8. AI-generated content
Text and images produced by InkWrit are generated by AI models in response to your input. Similar prompts can produce similar output for different users, so we cannot promise that generated material is unique.
The copyright status of AI-generated and AI-assisted work differs by country and continues to develop. We cannot advise you on how the law in your jurisdiction treats your book, and nothing on this site is legal advice.
Publishing platforms, retailers, competitions and awards set their own rules about AI-assisted work, including disclosure requirements. Complying with the rules of the platform you publish on is your responsibility.
You are responsible for the content you publish, including checking that it does not infringe anyone else's rights.
We make no warranty that AI-generated output does not infringe third-party rights. Generative models learn from large bodies of existing text and images, and output can resemble existing works. Before you publish commercially, review your book the way you would review any manuscript, and where the stakes justify it, obtain your own legal or editorial review.
9. Personal use and the commercial rights licence
By default, books you create carry a personal licence: you may write, revise, export and share your work, including with editors, agents and beta readers, at no additional cost.
Selling a book commercially requires the commercial rights licence add-on for that book. It is a one-time purchase per book, priced at $79 at the time of writing, and it is issued as a certificate recording the licence number, the book, the licensee and the date.
- The licence covers commercial sale and distribution of that book, including retail platforms and your own store.
- It is per book, not per account, and it does not expire or renew.
- It is not required to write, revise, analyse or export a book.
10. The ISBN service
The optional ISBN add-on assigns an ISBN to your book edition from our registered block and files the associated metadata on your behalf. It is a concierge service handled manually, not an instant one, and the status is shown in your account until it is issued.
An ISBN identifies a specific edition of a book. Significant changes to format or edition may require a new one. We are not responsible for how a retailer or distributor treats a title once it is registered.
11. The editor marketplace
The marketplace connects you with independent professional editors. Editors are independent contractors. They are not our employees, agents or partners, no employment or agency relationship is created by these terms, and we do not supervise, direct or guarantee their work. The editing engagement is between you and the editor; our role is the platform and the payment handling described below.
Payment for an editing job is collected when you hire and is held by us until you approve the delivered work. If you decline the delivery, the payment is refunded to you. Approving releases the payment to the editor, less our platform fee, which is included in the listed price rather than added on top.
A disagreement about the quality of delivered work is between you and the editor, although you can contact support and we will try to help resolve it. Hiring through the marketplace does not transfer any rights in your manuscript to the editor beyond what is needed to perform the work.
12. Websites
InkWrit can build and host a public website for you, your series or your book. Publishing one is your choice and happens only at your direction. Content on a published site is publicly visible to anyone with the address.
Every site gets a free address on our sites domain. You can also point a domain you already own at your site, or buy one through us — see the next section for what buying one involves.
You are responsible for the content of your published sites, including anything the AI builder produced at your direction. We may unpublish a site that breaches the acceptable use section.
- Site addresses are first come, first served. Some names are reserved because we use them ourselves or because they could be used to impersonate InkWrit.
- Pointing your own domain at a site requires DNS records at your provider. We verify that you control the domain before we serve anything on it.
- Unpublishing a site takes it offline and ends the licence you gave us to display its content.
13. Buying a domain through InkWrit
You can register a domain name from your account. We register it through our own registrar account and set it up to serve your site automatically. Prices shown at checkout include our service fee — they are higher than the wholesale registry price, and the price you see is the price you pay.
Until you transfer a domain to your own registrar account, InkWrit is the registrant of record for it. That is a consequence of how we register on your behalf, not a claim on the name: the domain is bought for you, we will not use it for anything else, and we will transfer it out whenever you ask.
You can start a transfer out at any time from the domain's page. We unlock the domain and send you the authorization code your new registrar needs. Some steps of this are still done by hand, so allow one business day for the code to arrive. We do not charge for transfers out and we will not refuse one.
ICANN requires registration contact details to be accurate. If you give us registrant details, you must keep them true and current, and you must respond to registry verification emails — a registry can suspend a domain whose contact details go unanswered.
- Registrations are final. Once the registry accepts a registration it cannot be cancelled or refunded, by us or by anyone.
- If a registration fails — usually because somebody registered the name in the seconds between your search and your payment — we refund that line automatically and tell you it happened. Other names in the same order are unaffected.
- Domains renew yearly. When auto-renew is on we charge your saved card shortly before expiry at the then-current renewal price, which can change if the registry changes its pricing. We email you a receipt.
- You can switch auto-renew off from the domain's page at any time. We then email you at 30, 14, 7 and 1 days before expiry, and the domain lapses on the expiry date — after which the registry can sell it to anyone.
- If a renewal charge is declined we retry and email you. If it keeps failing, the domain is treated as not renewing and lapses on its expiry date.
- WHOIS privacy is on by default where the extension supports it. Some extensions publish registrant details regardless, and we cannot override a registry's rules.
- Premium-priced names, and names above our price cap, are not sold through InkWrit. Not every extension is available.
14. Copyright complaints
If you believe content on a published InkWrit marketing site infringes your copyright, send a notice to legal@inkwrit.ai identifying the work, the page address, and your contact details, with a statement that you believe in good faith the use is not authorised and that your notice is accurate. We will review the notice, remove or disable access to material we conclude is infringing, and notify the account holder, who may respond with a counter-statement.
Accounts that repeatedly publish infringing material will be closed.
15. Acceptable use
InkWrit is for writing books. You may not use it to produce material that is unlawful, that sexualises minors in any way, that infringes someone else's copyright or trademark, that impersonates a real person in a deceptive manner, or that is intended to harass, defraud or incite violence.
We may suspend or close an account that breaches this section. Where we do, we will make a reasonable effort to let you export your own work first, unless the law prevents it.
16. Availability and changes to the service
InkWrit is an evolving product. Features may change, and we may add, alter or withdraw parts of the service. Where a change materially affects paid functionality you already rely on, we will give reasonable notice.
We aim for high availability but do not guarantee uninterrupted access. Maintenance, third-party provider outages and events outside our control can interrupt the service.
17. Liability
To the extent the law allows, InkWrit is provided as-is and as available, and we disclaim all implied warranties, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose and non-infringement. We are not liable for lost profits, lost sales, lost opportunities or indirect losses arising from your use of the service.
Where liability cannot be excluded, it is limited to the amount you have paid us in the twelve months before the event giving rise to the claim.
You agree to indemnify us against third-party claims that arise from content you publish through the service, from your commercial exploitation of a book, or from your breach of these terms. This does not apply to claims caused by our own breach of these terms.
Nothing here limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that cannot lawfully be limited.
18. Ending your account
You may close your account yourself at any time from Settings. Closing your account cancels any active subscription, deletes your content and stored files, and removes your stored API key if you had one. Export your work first: book exports are free and unlimited, and Settings also offers a one-click download of your data.
Unused tokens are forfeited on account closure and are not refunded, except where consumer law requires otherwise. If you are on a plan, cancel it before closing the account.
19. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms. Where a change is material, we will notify account holders before it takes effect. The date at the top of this page always reflects the current version.
20. General terms
These terms, together with the privacy policy and any add-on licence you purchase, are the entire agreement between you and us about the service.
If any part of these terms is found unenforceable, the rest remains in effect. If we do not enforce a provision, that is not a waiver of it.
We may assign these terms as part of a merger, acquisition or sale of the service; you may not assign your account or these terms to someone else.
21. Contact
Questions about these terms can be sent to legal@inkwrit.ai. Support requests, including anything about a token charge or a plan, go to support@inkwrit.ai.
