FAQ
Straight answers, including the awkward ones
Everything authors ask before they trust a tool with a book: what it costs, who owns the writing, whether the prose will actually sound like theirs, and what happens to a manuscript they abandon for a year.
Free to start — 100,000 tokens on signup, no card required.
Getting started
What happens in the first ten minutes, and what it takes to find out whether this works for you.
Is InkWrit really free to start?
Yes. Creating an account costs nothing and does not ask for a card, and no plan is required to use it. You get 100,000 tokens on signup, which is enough to distil your writing voice and draft a real chapter — the only test that tells you anything.
What do I need before I sign up?
Ideally a few thousand words you have already written and are reasonably happy with, so the voice engine has something to learn from. If you have nothing written yet, a guided interview builds a usable style profile in about ten minutes instead.
Do I have to let the AI write my book?
No, and plenty of authors do not. You can write every word yourself and use InkWrit only for outlining, the story bible, continuity analysis and publish-ready export. The editor, the bible and every export format are free and unmetered.
What kinds of books does it handle?
Novels and novellas, children's picture books and early readers, nonfiction and memoir, ghostwritten client books, and multi-book series. The format shapes how InkWrit plans: picture books are planned in spreads and page turns, nonfiction gets argument structure instead of plot beats, and fiction can start from one of five story structures or none at all.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. InkWrit is built mobile-first and installs as an app on iOS and Android. Drafting, editing and reviewing analysis all work on a phone — which matters more than it sounds when the only writing time you get is twenty minutes on a train.
Tokens, plans and billing
How the usage-based model works, whether you need a plan, and what a finished book actually costs.
Why tokens rather than one flat fee?
Because AI writing costs real money to run, and a single flat fee means the people who write occasionally subsidise the people who generate constantly. Tokens meter your own usage and nothing else. Plans exist to make that cheaper if you write steadily — what does not exist is a plan you are obliged to hold.
Do I have to be on a plan?
No. A plan buys tokens at a lower rate and suits anyone writing regularly, but you can ignore plans entirely and buy a one-time top-up instead. You can also write indefinitely on the free tier if you are doing the drafting yourself and only want the story bible, the outline board and the export formats.
What is a token worth?
A thousand tokens is a cent at the base rate, so $10 buys a million tokens. Plans bring the rate down: Author works out at $8.00 per million, Novelist at $7.25 and Series at $6.56.
What are the plans?
Author is $12 a month for 1,500,000 tokens, Novelist is $29 for 4,000,000 and Series is $59 for 9,000,000. Every plan unlocks exactly the same features — the whole product is available on the free tier too. A plan only changes how many tokens you get and what they cost.
What happens to tokens I do not use?
Plan tokens roll over for twelve months, so a month where life gets in the way is not a month thrown away. Tokens bought as a one-time top-up never expire at all.
What does a whole book cost?
A 24-page illustrated children's book is usually around $2.50 of tokens. A novella runs about $7, a 70,000-word novel about $17 including two analysis passes and a cover, and a five-book series roughly $80. Those are end-to-end totals at the base rate — on a plan the same books cost 20% to 34% less.
Can I run out of tokens in the middle of a chapter?
No. Every AI job is estimated before it starts, and InkWrit refuses to begin a job your balance will not cover rather than stopping halfway through. Estimates are deliberately cautious, and you are charged the actual usage afterwards, which is usually lower.
Can I see where my tokens went?
Yes. Every charge is written to a ledger with the job, the book, the chapter, the model used and the exact token count. Nothing is aggregated into an opaque monthly number.
Do I pay to export or download my book?
Never. Print PDF, EPUB, fixed-layout EPUB and DOCX exports are free and unlimited, on every plan and on none. Tokens pay for AI generation, not for getting your own work out.
Can I cancel or change plan?
Any time, and the tokens you have already been given stay in your balance under the twelve-month rollover. Cancelling drops you back to the free tier rather than locking you out of your own manuscripts.
Can I get a refund on unused tokens?
Token purchases are prepaid digital goods and are generally non-refundable once made, but we would rather sort out a genuine problem than keep money you feel was taken unfairly — contact support and we will look at it. Refund terms are set out in full in the terms of service.
The writing and the AI
What the voice engine does, what the analysis catches, and where the limits are.
How does it learn my voice?
Three layers. First, a style profile distilled from writing you supply — sentence rhythm, how much interiority you use, what your dialogue carries, the words you never reach for. Second, a set of exemplar passages from your best work that travel with every draft request. Third, a feedback loop: every edit you make to AI prose is treated as a correction and sharpens the profile.
Will the writing actually sound like me, or like AI?
That is exactly the thing the free tokens exist to let you test, and we would rather you tested it than took our word for it. What we can tell you is what we do about it: your own passages go into every request rather than an abstract description of your style, and the profile keeps learning from your edits instead of resetting each session.
What does the story analysis actually catch?
Plot holes and continuity breaks, information that reaches a character or the reader before the story earns it, pacing dips measured across the manuscript, and world-building that carries narrative weight but was never filled in. Every finding names the chapter, quotes the passage and explains the problem — so you are free to disagree.
Can it rewrite my book without asking?
No. Analysis is advisory and never edits your text. Story bible updates are proposed after each chapter and only applied when you approve them, which is what keeps the bible trustworthy enough to feed every other AI call.
Which AI models does it use?
InkWrit routes each job to an appropriate model — a fast, cheap one for summaries and story bible upkeep, a stronger one for drafting and analysis, and an optional premium model when you want the best prose available and are happy to pay for it. Model choice is shown in the cost estimate before a job runs.
Can I ask questions about my own manuscript?
Yes. Chat reads your actual manuscript and story bible, so it can answer the questions that otherwise mean rereading two hundred pages — where you last mentioned the lighthouse, whether you have already explained why she left the order, which characters know about the will, or whether the scene you are writing contradicts something earlier.
Is there anything for when I am stuck on one paragraph?
Highlight it and four tools sit on the selection. Describe rewrites the passage through a single sense — sight, sound, smell, taste or touch — which is the fastest cure for prose that has gone flat. Expand opens a compressed beat into a full scene, Rewrite offers variations to choose between, and Brainstorm suggests where the moment could go next. All four read your voice profile and story bible.
Do I have to outline from scratch?
No. You can start from Save the Cat, Three-Act Structure, Hero's Journey, Romancing the Beat or the 27-Chapter Method, and each one arrives as real beats placed where they conventionally fall, with a note on what each is for. Freeform exists for books where a structure would only get in the way. The template shapes the outline, never the prose, and every beat is editable.
What is the longest book it can handle?
Length is not the constraint, because InkWrit never tries to fit the whole manuscript into one request. It assembles context deliberately: your style profile, the story bible entries relevant to the scene, rolling summaries of every prior chapter and the tail of the previous one. That is why chapter thirty is written with as much context as chapter two.
Ownership, rights and your material
Who owns what you write here, and what the commercial licence is actually for.
Do I own what I write in InkWrit?
Yes. Your manuscript, your story bible, your outlines and your notes are yours. We claim no ownership of your writing, and we do not train models on your manuscripts.
Then what is the $79 commercial rights add-on?
It is a per-book licence covering commercial exploitation of a book produced with InkWrit — selling it on Amazon KDP, IngramSpark, your own store, or licensing an audiobook adaptation. You write, revise and export freely under the default personal licence; you buy the commercial licence for a specific book when you are ready to sell it, usually the week you publish. It is one payment, per book, and you get a signed certificate with a licence number.
What about the illustrations and cover art?
Images generated for your book are yours to use in that book on the same basis as the text, with commercial sale covered by the commercial rights licence. Terms for generated imagery are set out in the terms of service, and the draft is published now so you can read it before you commit anything.
What does the $49 ISBN include?
An ISBN assigned to your book edition from our registered block, with the metadata filed on your behalf. It is a concierge service rather than an instant one, and the status is tracked in your account until it is issued. You keep the imprint — it is your book.
Do I have to disclose that I used AI?
That depends on where you are publishing. Some retailers and competitions require disclosure of AI-assisted or AI-generated content, and their rules differ and change. It is worth checking the specific platform's current policy before you upload — we cannot make that determination for you.
Formatting and publishing
What comes out at the end, and whether a printer will accept it.
What formats can I export?
A typeset print PDF with real novel typography — running heads, drop caps, proper chapter openers — plus reflowable EPUB for ebook stores, fixed-layout EPUB for children's picture books, and DOCX in standard manuscript format for agents and editors.
Will the print PDF work with KDP or IngramSpark?
That is what it is built for. You choose a trim size and InkWrit applies the margins, gutter, bleed and font embedding those platforms expect, rather than exporting a document and leaving you to work it out.
Can I control the typography?
Yes. Layout theme, typeface, trim size and chapter-opener style are all yours to set, and you can re-export as many times as you like at no cost while you experiment.
Does it publish to Amazon for me?
No. InkWrit produces the files; you upload them and keep the publishing account, the royalties and the control. Direct publishing integration is not part of the current product.
Marketing, websites and hiring an editor
What happens on the far side of a finished manuscript.
Do you build my author website?
Yes — and not from a blank template. InkWrit already has the manuscript, the blurb, the characters and the cover, so it builds from those. You get an author site for you, one for each series and one for each book, interlinked the way readers actually move: someone finds book three, follows it to the series, and lands on your author page with the rest of the catalogue. Publishing is one click and everything stays editable afterwards.
What is in a launch marketing pack?
A back-cover blurb, a store-ready book description, a 30-day social calendar rather than five posts and a shrug, ad variants to test against each other, and a launch email sequence. All of it is generated from your finished manuscript and your voice profile, so the blurb is about your actual plot and the posts can quote your actual lines.
Who owns the marketing copy?
You do, outright, on exactly the same basis as the manuscript. Blurbs, descriptions, social posts, ad copy, email sequences and your published sites are yours to use, edit, repurpose or throw away. We claim no ownership of them and no licence beyond running the service for you.
Is the marketing copy charged differently?
No. Marketing packs and site generation are AI jobs like any other — token-metered, estimated before they run, and itemised in your ledger afterwards. There is no separate marketing subscription and no per-site fee.
Can I hire a real human editor?
Yes, and we would rather say plainly that you should. Analysis catches contradictions and pacing dips; it does not tell you the middle is twenty pages too long and the ending is unearned. Vetted developmental, line, copy and proofreading editors work inside InkWrit — browse by specialty and by the word count they take on, send a brief straight from your manuscript, and hire without exporting anything or starting an email thread.
How much does an editor cost?
Editors set their own price per job, so it depends on the editor, the kind of edit and the length of your book. It is not token-metered and we do not set the rate — payment is simply handled in-app so the job, the brief and the manuscript stay in one place.
Series and long-running work
How continuity survives past the book you are currently writing.
How does a series share a world?
A series is a real container. World-level entries — characters, locations, rules, factions, timeline, planted facts — live at the series level, and every book in the series reads from them. Add book six two years later and it inherits the entire world the day you create it.
Can it stop the AI spoiling book three in book two?
Yes. Entries can be spoiler-gated to a chapter or a book. Mark a revelation as unknown until book three and it cannot appear in book two, no matter what you ask for.
Can I check a new book against the ones I have already published?
Yes, provided the earlier books are in InkWrit — and if they are not, import them first. Continuity analysis runs across the whole series, so you get cited contradictions against everything that came before, not just the current manuscript: the character who died two books ago and turns up at a wedding, the city that moved, the rule you quietly broke to make a scene work.
Can I import a book I wrote somewhere else?
Yes. Bring in a DOCX, TXT or Markdown file and one pass extracts your chapters, builds the story bible from what is already written, and distils a style profile from your existing prose. Most writing tools assume you are starting at page one; this is the usual way authors actually arrive, whether that is 40,000 words into a stalled novel or three books into a series.
Does the AI understand that my world changes between books?
Yes, and this is the part a flat set of notes cannot do. Story bible entries carry a validity range — a fact can start being true at a given book and chapter and stop being true later. The bridge stands through book two and is rubble from book three; the king reigns until the coup. When you draft a scene, the AI reads the version of the world that was true at that point in the story rather than the version that is true now.
Your account and your data
Where your manuscript lives and what happens to it.
Do you train AI models on my writing?
No. Your manuscripts are used to produce your book — assembling context for your own AI calls — and for nothing else.
Can I get my work out if I stop using InkWrit?
Always, and for free. Export DOCX, EPUB and PDF at any time, as often as you like. We are not interested in holding a manuscript hostage.
What happens to a project I abandon?
Nothing. It stays where you left it and costs nothing to keep, because only AI jobs are metered. Come back to it in two years and the story bible will still be there.
How do I get help?
Email support@inkwrit.ai. If something has gone wrong with a token charge, include the ledger entry — every charge is itemised, which makes problems quick to sort out.
