Pricing
Free to start. After that you pay for the writing, not the seat.
You get 100,000 tokens when you sign up, and nothing in InkWrit is metered except the AI itself. Write steadily and a plan gets you tokens at up to a third off, with anything unused rolling over for a year. Write in bursts and you can skip plans altogether and top up once.

How it works
Tokens, in plain author language
Tokens exist because AI writing costs real money to run, and hiding that inside one flat fee means light users pay for heavy ones. Here is the whole system.
- 1
You start with 100,000 free tokens
Signing up costs nothing and does not ask for a card. The grant is enough to distil your writing voice and draft a first chapter, which is the only way to judge whether the writing actually sounds like you.
- 2
Every AI job is priced before it runs
Ask InkWrit to draft a chapter and it shows the estimate first. If your balance will not cover it, it refuses to start rather than half-writing something and stopping.
A thousand tokens is a cent at the base rate, so a chapter draft of 25,000 tokens is about a quarter. There is no separate currency to convert in your head.
- 3
You are charged for what actually ran
Estimates are deliberately cautious. When a job finishes, the real usage is written to your ledger — usually below the estimate — and you can see every line: which chapter, which model, how many tokens.
- 4
A plan or a top-up, whichever suits how you write
A plan gives you a monthly allowance at a lower rate, and anything you do not use rolls over for a year. If you write in unpredictable bursts, skip the plan entirely and buy tokens once — those never expire at all.
You can switch between the two, and a plan is never required to keep working on a book.
Plans
Three plans, and the only difference is how many tokens you get
Every plan unlocks the same product — the whole feature set is available on the free tier too. What a plan buys you is a lower rate per million tokens and an allowance that rolls over.
Author
One book on the go
$12 /month
1,500,000 tokens a month
20% off the base rate
About 40 chapters a month drafted and revised — a chapter a day, with a full analysis pass on top.

- Most authors land here
Novelist
Writing at pace
$29 /month
4,000,000 tokens a month
28% off the base rate
About 105 chapters a month. Comfortably two full novels drafted, revised, analysed and covered.
$7.25 per million tokens
Series
Several books at once
$59 /month
9,000,000 tokens a month
34% off the base rate
About 240 chapters a month. Built for a series on a deadline, or a ghostwriter with a client list.
$6.56 per million tokens
Unused plan tokens roll over for 12 months, so a quiet month is not a wasted one. Change plan or cancel whenever you like — and if a plan is not for you, top up once instead.
No plan? No problem
Or buy tokens once and forget about it
Plenty of authors write in concentrated bursts and resent a monthly charge running through the quiet months. Top-ups are for them: pay once, and the tokens sit there until you use them.
$10
1,000,000 tokens
Roughly 20 chapters drafted and revised — or three or four children's picture books, illustrations included.
$10.00 per million tokens
- Most common top-up
$25
2,750,000 tokens
9% off the base rate
Roughly 60 chapters. Enough to draft, revise and analyse a full-length novel with room left over.
$9.09 per million tokens
$50
6,000,000 tokens
17% off the base rate
Roughly 130 chapters — two or three novels, or a picture-book catalogue.
$8.33 per million tokens
$100
13,000,000 tokens
23% off the base rate
Roughly 285 chapters. A whole series, start to finish, with analysis passes on every book.
$7.69 per million tokens · best pack rate
$10 once, not $10 a month. Top-up tokens never expire, and you can write for years on nothing but the free tier if the AI is not doing the heavy lifting.
Real numbers
What a book actually costs
These are typical end-to-end figures for finishing a book, not per-month estimates. Write at whatever pace you like; the total is the same.
| What you're making | Tokens | Real cost |
|---|---|---|
| A children's picture book24 pages, 12 illustrations, a cover, and text tuned for read-aloud rhythm | Tokens: ~250,000 | Real cost: ~$2.50 |
| A novella30,000 words across 12 chapters, each drafted and revised once | Tokens: ~700,000 | Real cost: ~$7 |
| A full-length novel70,000 words, an outline, a draft and revision pass per chapter, two analysis runs and a cover | Tokens: ~1,700,000 | Real cost: ~$17 |
| A ghostwritten nonfiction book50,000 words, voice-matched to the author and revised heavily | Tokens: ~1,300,000 | Real cost: ~$13 |
| A five-book seriesFive novels sharing one story bible, with covers for all five | Tokens: ~8,000,000 | Real cost: ~$80 |
Costs shown at the base rate of $10 per million tokens — on a plan the same book costs 20% to 34% less. Your real total depends on chapter length, how many revision passes you run, and whether you turn on premium prose for the drafting model. Every job shows its estimate before it runs.
And what each individual action costs
Useful if you want to sanity-check the numbers above, or if you plan to write most of the book yourself and use the AI only for architecture.
| What you're doing | Tokens | Real cost |
|---|---|---|
| Draft a chapterAbout 2,500 words, written in your voice with the full story bible in context | Tokens: 20,000–30,000 | Real cost: ~$0.25 |
| Revise a chapterA full pass for pacing, dialogue and continuity — or a targeted pass on a selection | Tokens: 10,000–15,000 | Real cost: ~$0.13 |
| Outline a full novelChapter-by-chapter structure with pivotal points and planted twists | Tokens: 25,000–40,000 | Real cost: ~$0.35 |
| Run a story-architecture analysisPlot holes, early spoilers, pacing dips and thin world-building across the whole manuscript | Tokens: 40,000–60,000 | Real cost: ~$0.50 |
| Keep the story bible currentRuns automatically after each chapter to log new facts and character changes for your approval | Tokens: 1,000–3,000 | Real cost: ~$0.02 |
| Generate an illustrationA single children's book page illustration, style-matched to the rest of the book | Tokens: 10,000 | Real cost: $0.10 |
| Generate a coverFront cover artwork at print resolution | Tokens: 20,000 | Real cost: $0.20 |
Dollar figures are the midpoint of each token range at the base rate. Analysis and drafting scale with manuscript length — a plot-hole pass over 30 chapters costs more than one over 8.
Not metered
What stays free, no matter how much you use it
Tokens pay for AI generation — drafting, analysis, images, and the marketing copy and sites you build from a finished book. Everything else is yours to use without a meter running, on every plan and on none. Hiring a human editor sits outside tokens entirely: those are priced per job by the editor.
Unlimited books and series
Start twenty projects and abandon nineteen. Nothing is metered until an AI job runs, so there is no cost to thinking out loud.
Your story bible
Characters, locations, timelines, planted facts and spoiler gates. Storing and editing them is free — tokens are only spent when the AI reads them to write something.
Every export format
Print-ready PDF with real novel typography, EPUB, fixed-layout children's EPUB and DOCX. Formatting and downloads are never charged.
See the export formatsThe writing studio itself
Write the whole book by hand in InkWrit and spend nothing. Plenty of authors use the AI for architecture and analysis only.
Add-ons
Two things you can buy once, per book

Pricing questions
The questions authors ask before they sign up
Do I have to be on a plan?
No. A plan buys tokens at a lower rate and suits anyone writing steadily, but you can ignore plans entirely, buy a one-time top-up and work from that for as long as it lasts. You can also write indefinitely on the free tier if you are doing the drafting yourself.
What is a token worth?
A thousand tokens is a cent at the base rate, so $10 buys a million tokens. Plans lower that rate: Author works out at $8.00 per million, Novelist $7.25 and Series $6.56.
What happens to tokens I do not use?
Plan tokens roll over for twelve months, so a month where life gets in the way is not a month wasted. Tokens from a one-time top-up never expire at all.
What does a whole book cost?
A 24-page illustrated children's book is usually around $2.50 of tokens. A novella runs about $7, a 70,000-word novel about $17 including two analysis passes and a cover, and a five-book series roughly $80. Those are end-to-end totals, not monthly figures.
What happens if I run out mid-chapter?
It cannot happen. InkWrit estimates every job before it starts and refuses to begin if your balance will not cover it, so you never end up with a chapter cut off halfway through.
Do I have to pay to publish or export?
No. Print PDF, EPUB, fixed-layout children's EPUB and DOCX exports are free and unlimited on every plan and on no plan at all. Tokens pay for AI generation, not for getting your own work out of the tool.
What about the author website and the launch marketing?
Both are AI jobs like any other — token-metered, estimated before they run, itemised in your ledger afterwards. There is no separate marketing subscription, no per-site fee, and publishing a site does not cost anything on top. As with every job, you see the estimate before you commit to it.
How are human editors priced?
Not in tokens. Editors in the marketplace set their own price per job, so it depends on the editor, the kind of edit and your word count. We do not set the rate or take it out of your balance — payment is just handled in-app so the brief, the job and the manuscript stay together.
Do I need the commercial rights add-on to write a book?
No. You write, revise and export freely with a personal licence. The $79 commercial rights licence is only needed when you sell that book, and you buy it per book — usually the week you publish, not the day you start.
More questions about ownership, models and exports are answered in the full FAQ.
